Last month (November 2017) I was lucky enough to attend the inaugural Youpreneur Summit in London. Hosted by Chris Ducker, this event was all about bringing online business owners together to network, be educated and inspired.
I was excited by the line up of speakers – 2 of my favourite podcasters, Janet Murray of Soulful PR & Pat Flynn from the Smart Passive Income Podcast, would be there speaking in person plus the amazing Carrie Green from the Female Entrepreneur Association, whose book I’ve found to be an ongoing source of motivation.
I couldn’t resist buying a ticket and, taking Janet Murray’s advice from one of her podcasts, I hustled around to find the funds to go along!
I had some nerves walking in on the first morning, alone and with very little prospect of bumping into anyone I would know! But I need not have worried – so many people were in the same boat and there was a really friendly vibe among the whole crowd. The fact that we were actively encouraged to sit with people we didn’t know helped us loners.
I was so impressed that I learnt something from every single one of the speakers over the 2 days of the event. Some delivered more value to me personally than others but there was something to learn from each of them. Hats off to Chris and his team for such a stellar line up.
When the first Mastermind session started the nerves kicked in again as I realised I would be the centre of attention on my table for a whole 15 MINUTES! Devoted to me and my business – an opportunity to hear others’ perspectives on what I do, the challenges I face and the ideas I have. It was scary stuff but it’s safe to say I am now absolutely hooked on this as a means to help me grow my business. The feedback others gave was invaluable and it’s opened up another avenue I had not even considered beforehand. On day 2 the chance to do the same again, with another set of strangers, was the icing on the cake.
I bought my ticket and went along to this event expecting to be inspired by the speakers. And I was. I did not expect to be going home with an exclusive, signed copy of Rise of the Youpreneur and a chocolate advent calendar. But I did! But the real gold dust were those Mastermind sessions.
Sharing so much of our vulnerability and doubt as well as success stories and experience with each other was something really special. And I’ve been taking action since then like never before. Don’t get me wrong, I’m still Director of Procrastination at times, but that’s getting pushed down the list of priorities and, I hope, will drop off altogether soon because of the clarity and direction I’ve gained. I can’t wait for next year!
When you attend a well chosen event, amazing things can happen in your life. Not only in your business life but in your personal world too. It has really underlined to me what I think and talk about in my job as an Event Consultant – crafting a meaningful and memorable experience for your guests should be your number 1 priority. Sending guests away delighted, inspired and having made valuable new connections can only serve you well in the future, both in your wider business and with your next event firmly in your sights.
